Lviv Business Angels Summit II

Read the rest of this entry »

Lviv Business Angels Summit Summary

Nearly 25 people participated in the conference.
An opening speech was made by Rostyslav Chayka, a founder of HTBan.org, who told about the goal of the organization which is:

1)   to select projects of high quality for investment and

2)   to create the culture of the venture investing into hi-tech projects in Western Ukraine.

The main problems that interfere with investing into venture projects were briefly covered: startup entrepreneurs lack experience how to present a project to investor, they don’t know what key factors are interesting for private investor, it is difficult to conduct an expert evaluation of projects with scientific element. These problems lead to absence of venture market in Ukraine and impossibility to invest into high-opportunity startups.

“Out of 100 projects that were presented during 8 months in Lviv Startup Club we have selected 2 that were most ready for investment; we will show them on this conference ” – said Rostyslav Chayka. It was also interesting to listen what services HTBan provides: “Selection and expert evaluation of applications, educational activities, and search of venture funds for following investment rounds”.

Kateryna Mykula, investment analyst of eVenture Capital began her report from analysis of investment funds – what is the difference in statutory capitals, at what stages they invest. The participants learned that eVenture Capital invests from USD 200 thousand to couple of millions. They have made investments into two projects in Ukraine: mapia.ua and one on lead generation. There is also one project realized in Russia. It was interesting to learn about investor types: institutional, portfolio and strategic. Kateryna classified business angels into a) core angels (with experience of couple investments), b) hi tech angels (that are interested in being a part of technology development) and c) ROI – angels that are interested in profit and minimum risks. “Projects with strong team and weak idea are more interesting for our fund rather than vice versa” – marked  Kateryna Mykula. The participants saw the startup cammock of different project growth stages and found out what investors one can count on on these stages. “There are many sources for getting applications for investment. The main are personal contacts, participation in thematic conferences and recommendations of startup-incubators” – added добавила Kateryna Mykula.
